Opportunities to Participate

Beautification

From keeping the Community Kitchen clean and organized to setting up seasonal window displays, helping organize the Costume Cupboard, or bringing in fresh-cut flowers from your garden – there are so many projects to take ownership of or get involved with at the school – the sky is the limit!

Board Participation

The VWS Board of Trustees is comprised of Vancouver Waldorf School Society staff, parents, alumni, and community member volunteers. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the school’s financial stability and long-term health and meets once a month to deliberate over such topics as budget, fundraising, tuition, strategic planning, and healthy community life. Keep an eye on the VWS newsletter for calls for trustee nominations in September/October of each year or contact chairbot@vws.ca for any questions in the meantime.

Baking

It’s always lovely to offer delicious freshly baked goods to our community and guests at Waldorf Welcomes, Open Houses, receptions and meetings. If you have culinary skills to share, consider signing up for the PAC bakers list to receive requests for occasional baking for these and other events.

Class Representative

This vital role is usually shared with another class parent and is staffed early in the school year. The class representative (class rep) acts as a liaison between the class teacher and parents/guardians. All class reps meet together to share information and support one another throughout the year. Reach out directly to your class teacher to volunteer for this important role.

Classroom Projects

Your class teacher may request that families support their work by collecting pine cones, stitching bean bags, saving egg cartons or cardboard containers to be used for children’s work in the classroom. Before the school year begins, you may also be invited to join other parents and guardians to tidy the outdoor play yard and classroom. Your class may also undertake event fundraising, which you will be encouraged to support. When your child’s class presents their play, your time, talent and generosity will definitely be requested.

Coffee Socials

Friday morning coffee socials have been a tradition for a number of years now at the Lynn Valley campus. VWS parents and friends are invited to gather for conversation, coffee or tea, and a bite to eat before moving on with their day. Assistants for purchasing supplies and setup are needed. For the 2023/2024 school year morning coffees are happening on the second fourth Friday of each month.

Fairs

These wonderful events are gifted to our children and community every year because all parents and guardians take a role in bringing them to life. Your class rep will let you know how you can support the unique responsibilities held by your class. If you wish to take on a more significant role, consider reaching out below to express your interest.

Gardening & Playgrounds

If you would like to help beautify our grounds and play yards through the year, your efforts will be appreciated. Light work is typical, tools and equipment are supplied, and no experience is necessary. It’s not uncommon to see volunteer gardeners pulling weeds or pruning bushes while their young children play nearby. Please sign up below and we will connect you with the lead gardener.

Parent Committee

The Parent Committee works collaboratively with parents, faculty and administration in many areas of school life and offers a place of initiative and social renewal. If you’re interested in joining, please email vwspac@gmail.com to express your interest.

Special Events

Getting involved with special events is a great way to form connections with families through all grades while lending a much-welcomed hand or two. Our special events include Parent Education Evenings, Open Houses, Community Forums, and community socials. Your participation in helping with special events may involve setting up chairs and tables, displaying signage, cleaning up afterwards, decorating spaces, or picking up flowers or refreshments from a local bakery.

Red Door Store

The Red Door Store Manager is always looking for volunteers to enable the store to be open more hours. Training will be provided. Please email reddoor@vws.ca to express your interest.
