  • Native Plant Sale - supporting our ecosystem and the school

The VWS Gardening Committee organizes a native plant sale each spring term with proceeds going towards the VWS Community Fund, which supports student programs at the VWS like our gardening program! Check back in April/May for links.

Native plants are so named because they grow naturally and thrive in BC. They can withstand pretty much any condition and have existed for generations, outlasting unsavoury soil conditions, sweltering heat, rough winds, and frosty winters. Once established in your garden, your native plants will survive even the toughest rainfalls and will be some of the most disease-resistant plants in your yard.

From an ecological perspective, these plants help turn our yards into beautiful, functional, and humane landscapes that give back to a diverse community of plant life. They work to sustain other wildlife, like our bee and butterfly populations. All you have to do is give your native plants an occasional watering and sufficient sunlight; then, they can take it from there.

Did you know?

If every VWS family bought $650 worth of grocery cards from the school’s program for each of the ten months of the school year that we would raise nearly $50,000 for the Community Fund from that alone! If you find you’re running out of grocery cards before your month of shopping is complete, please reach out to accounting@vws.ca to purchase one-off additional cards or to increase your ongoing monthly order. Remember, this is no additional money out of your pocket, you simply buy grocery store gift cards dollar-for-dollar then use them to pay for your food.
